This course is designed to provide introductory training for the system manager of an established VAX or Alpha computer or OpenVMS Cluster system running the OpenVMS operating system. This system may be part of a larger network or cluster.

This course features:

• Understanding how the system interacts with other systems in a OpenVMS Cluster networked environment.
• Gaining a context for optimally managing OpenVMS in a distributed environment, including SCSI clusters
• Developing command procedures to automate day-to-day system management operations.
• Optimizing OpenVMS management by eliminating manual repetition of day-to-day tasks.
• Providing for general system and data security by managing user accounts, resource access, and performing backup and restoration of files.
• Protecting user data and allow user access to site specific required levels.
• Extending Cluster Wide Process Services capability to allow process creations on remote nodes in a OpenVMS Cluster environment.
• Managing the operation of local and cluster-wide batch and print queues.
• Meeting site requirements for batch and printer utilization.

Who Should Attend
Technical support staff with little or no experience in managing OpenVMS systems that may be part of larger networks and/or OpenVMS Clusters.

Prerequisites
Before taking this course, students should be able to:

• Log in and out of an OpenVMS system
• Use DCL to issue commands
• Create a file using an editor, such as EDT or EVE
• Use commands to look at, copy and manipulate files
• Understand the use of UIC protection codes to secure files and data
• Create and navigate directory structures

• Define backup terms, list things to be considered when planning backups, and construct a BACKUP command
• Make backups of a disk to tape
• Use command procedures for backups
• Restore files from backup copies
• Use the BACKUP command to list the contents of a save set
• Shut down an OpenVMS System
• Start an OpenVMS system from the default system device
• Boot satellite nodes from a boot server
